Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana.- Los Juegos Olímpicos de Sydney 2000, oficialmente conocidos como los Juegos de la XXVII Olimpíada se celebraron en Sydney, Australia del 15 de septiembre al 1 de octubre de 2000.
En la ocasión 199 países, 10,651 atletas en 28 deportes vieron acción en Sydney 2000 siendo la segunda vez que Australia presentó la máxima expresión deportiva a nivel mundial ya que la primera fue en la ciudad de Melbourne en 1956 y realizará la tercera entrega según la asignación actual del Comité Olímpico Internacional en Bisbane 2032.
La victoria de la atleta indígena australiana Cathy Freeman en los 400 metros ante un estadio lleno sigue siendo la imagen que define la cita bajo los cinco aros de Sídney, como ciudad sede.
Para estos Juegos de Sydney me correspondió ser el director administrativo de la delegación de República Dominicana en mi condición de tesorero del Comité Olímpico Dominicano, además, presente como vicepresidente de la Federación Internacional de Judo (FIJ) y presidente de la Unión Panamericana de Judo (UPJ).
En la ocasión el presidente del Comité Olímpico Dominicano (COD) lo era el doctor José Joaquín Puello Herrera y su secretario general el licenciado Luis Mejía Oviedo.
Como Jefe de Misión de la delegación dominicana estuvo el arquitecto Héctor Duval quien realizó un estupendo trabajo de organización y representación en esta participación del país.
Muy gratos los recuerdos de la ciudad de Sydney, su gente amable, seguridad y lugares emblemáticos como su Opera House, entre otras atracciones.
En el medallero general Cuba sacó la cabeza por Latinoamérica al lograr un noveno lugar producto de 11 medallas de oro, igual cantidad de plata y 7 de bronce para un total de 29 preseas.
Por su parte los Estados Unidos obtuvieron el primer lugar con 37 oro, 24 de plata y 32 de bronce para 93 preseas en total, seguido por Rusia en segundo lugar y China en honrosa tercera posición.
En las actividades que me correspondieron participar recibí un dibujo del niño Isobel Minack de Mosman Public School con el tema «Bienvenido a Australia», externando su criterio en lo que el dibujo significaba para él.
Anexo la copia del dibujo en cuestión en ambas caras en estos 25 años de la celebración de los Juegos de la XXVII Olimpíada Sydney 2000 que disfruté en compañía de mi hijo Jaime y mi amigo de toda una larga vida el panameño Miguel Vanegas.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.- The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXVII Olympiad, were held in Sydney, Australia, from September 15 to October 1, 2000.
199 countries and 10,651 athletes in 28 sports competed in Sydney 2000. This was the second time Australia has hosted the world’s premier sporting event, with the first being in Melbourne in 1956. It will also be the third time, according to the International Olympic Committee’s current allocation, in Sydney 2032.
Indigenous Australian athlete Cathy Freeman’s victory in the 400 meters before a packed stadium remains the defining image of the event under Sydney’s five rings as host city.
For these Sydney Games, I was the administrative director of the Dominican Republic delegation in my capacity as treasurer of the Dominican Olympic Committee. I was also present as vice president of the International Judo Federation (IJF) and president of the Panamerican Judo Union (PJU).
On this occasion, the president of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD) was Dr. José Joaquín Puello Herrera, and its secretary general was Luis Mejía Oviedo.
The architect Héctor Duval served as the Dominican delegation’s chef de mission, performing a superb job of organizing and representing the country’s participation.
I have very fond memories of the city of Sydney, its friendly people, its security, and its iconic sites like the Opera House, among other attractions.
In the overall medal table, Cuba stood out for Latin America, achieving ninth place with 11 gold medals, the same number of silver medals, and 7 bronze medals, for a total of 29 medals.
For its part, the United States took first place with 37 gold, 24 silver, and 32 bronze medals for a total of 93 medals, followed by Russia in second place and China in honorable third place.
In the activities in which I participated, I received a drawing from Mosman Public School student Isobel Minack with the theme «Welcome to Australia,» expressing his thoughts on what the drawing meant to him.
I am attaching a copy of the drawing in question, both sides of which were shared during these 25 years of the celebration of the Games of the XXVII Olympiad Sydney 2000, which I enjoyed in the company of my son Jaime and my lifelong friend, Panamanian Miguel Vanegas.
