Republic.– The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on August 23, 2013, and has been celebrated worldwide every April 6 since then. This date coincides with the 1896 Inaugural Ceremony of the first Olympic Games of the Modern Era in Athens, Greece.
On that occasion, the then-President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge of Belgium, received the UN General Assembly’s approval and resolution for the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. He participated in the ceremony, where he emphasized the importance of sport as an instrument of empowerment and a focus on peace, security, health, education, gender equality, and inclusion.
Its main objective was to highlight how sport can foster positive change, overcome barriers, and unite communities, promoting values such as respect, equality, solidarity, and the importance of teamwork.
We are now in the thirteenth edition of this celebration, which recognizes sport as a low-cost, high-impact tool for social development, inclusion, and peacebuilding. The theme for 2026 is «Sport Builds Bridges and Breaks Down Barriers,» highlighting sport’s unique ability to foster connection, inclusion, and peace in an increasingly fragmented world.
This day aims to promote gender equality, foster peace and tolerance, and drive sustainable development, among other objectives. Local and global events are held, including activities at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. UNESCO, as the lead agency, emphasizes the values of sport, highlighting fair play and the spirit of team competition, which have an imperative that extends far beyond the stadiums.
Thus, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace not only involves physical activities, but also reaffirms the role of sport as a driving force for social transformation for people from different cultures, while promoting more equitable, just, and peaceful societies. It serves as a call to governments and their Ministries of Sport, various international organizations, civil society, and the burgeoning private sector to utilize sport as a cornerstone of development and peace.
The Panamerican Judo Union (PJU) actively joined in the celebration of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace with each and every one of its grassroots organizations, following the guidelines of the United Nations, the International Olympic Committee, Peace and Sport (whose patron is Prince Albert II of Monaco), and its governing body, the World Judo Federation (WJF).
The Executive Committee of the Panamerican Judo Union (PJU) is composed of Jaime Casanova Martínez, who is the president of the Dominican Republic, and Elizabeth Thompson Fantuzzi, who holds the position of vice president of Chile. In addition, Julián Abreu Jiménez holds the position of secretary general of the United States, Edgar Ramiro Claure Mayorga is the treasurer of Bolivia, Paolo Galileu is the sports director of Brazil, and Lizardo Suazo is the technical director of refereeing of Chile.
