The president of Japan’s National Olympic Committee and a gold medallist in judo at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, will be honoured for his contribution to Olympism, both as an athlete and as a leading national figure in sport. Now aged 68, he has stepped back from his official duties due to injury.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The decision was reported by several sources and cited by\u00a0The Mainichi<\/em>, and was approved during an Intertantional Olympic Committee board meeting held in June.\u00a0Yasuhiro\u00a0<\/strong>Yamashita<\/a>\u00a0will forever be remembered for his remarkable victory in the judo final at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where he defeated Mohamed Ali Rashwan.<\/p>\n Despite suffering a torn calf muscle in an earlier round, which left him visibly limping, Yamashita prevailed in the semi-finals and then final. Rashwan showed great sportsmanship by choosing not to target Yamashita’s injured leg \u2014 an act that later earned him the Fair Play Trophy in recognition of his respectful conduct.<\/p>\n In October 2023, during his third term as\u00a0JOC president<\/a>, Yamashita sustained a cervical spine injury which has since prevented him from fulfilling his responsibilities. It is widely expected that he will step down from all his roles, including his position as an IOC member,\u00a0which he assumed in January 2020 upon the recommendation of the IOC Executive Board<\/a>. At that time, he joined the global body alongside David Haggerty, president of the International Tennis Federation, and Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA.<\/p>\n Yamashita is an inspirational figure for new generations of athletes in Japan<\/a>, thanks to both his sporting achievements and his personal values. He won four consecutive world judo titles (in 1979 and twice in 1981, including the open category), as well as nine consecutive All-Japan Championships. Between 1977 and 1985, he achieved 203 consecutive victories, never losing to a non-Japanese opponent.<\/p>\n A graduate of Tokai University’s Faculty of Physical Education, where he later became a professor, he has served as Director of Education for the International Judo Federation since 2003. He is also notable for his social commitment. As the founder of the NGO Solidarity of International Judo Education (SJI), he has promoted cultural exchange through judo with initiatives reaching countries such as Israel, Palestine and Russia.<\/p>\n In 1984, he was awarded the prestigious People’s Honour Award by the Japanese government, along with other decorations such as the Purple Ribbon Medal. His life,\u00a0marked by respect, humility and service<\/a>, has earned him a distinguished reputation in Japan and beyond.\u00a0His dedication to judo’s<\/a>\u00a0core values of courtesy and honour underpins his legacy, which is now further recognised through this Olympic distinction.
