Martial Arts events world-wide have been cancelled, even the 2020 Olympics which was designed to showcase Karate for the first time ever.

Further, many major sports events for 2021 have been postponed to 2022! Martial Arts dojos in many countries have had to survive using digital teaching and other creative ideas. In some areas of the world, classes with any bodily contact are prohibited. And there are more uncertainties. Will the virus come back quickly after all the openings across the world or will it resurface sometime this fall or winter to wreak havoc again on our global community? No one knows.

We have had to learn new phrases and ideas such as social distancing, deep cleaning, and sheltering in place. During this time it is imperative that no matter what our politics are that we as martial artists provide an exemplary example to those we influence. As martial artists this means that we show courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and an indomitable spirit. It also means that we get things right.

Courtesy – the wearing of a mask does not show your fear of others. It is simply showing a courtesy to your fellow man and protects them from you, not you from them. We have this backwards in the United States. If a mask is uncomfortable, think of wearing a neck gator and pull it up as necessary over your nose and mouth like the old time bandits! We have a responsibility as martial artists to show respect to others and if this requires a mask, so be it. We need to help change the thinking in our country about the use of masks.

Integrity – just because we do not like something (closing down of business and loss of income) does not mean that we use denial. It is our job to protect life (isn’t that what self-defense is for) not destroy it. We should show our integrity in following rules and regulations regardless of whether we agree or not. These restrictions have been empirically shown to slow the spread of the disease.

Perseverance – we will continue to keep the flow of martial arts going – both physical and spiritual – despite any difficulties we might encounter. As martial artists we will show how to embrace new ways and see this through.

Self-control – It is our responsibility to show the self-control during this time of adversity that is needed and be an example of what it takes to not only flatten the curve but eliminate all circumstances of covid-19. Flattening the curve only means that cases level out so that we only get x amount of hospital admissions a week. It does not mean we are done dying of the disease and that it has gone away.

For those of us in the United States, having over 25% of the covid-19 deaths in the world is unacceptable. As Americans and martial artists it is our duty to do what we can to change this and provide leadership where it is lacking.

Indomitable Spirit – We will not give up the defeating of this virus and will do all that we can to keep ourselves and our loved ones and students, our country and culture alive.

As martial artists, it is our duty to thoroughly understand what we teach and teach it correctly and workably to our students and at the same time prepare them for life’s goals and adversities.

This means understanding completely the enemy (Covid-19) and doing nothing that would help it in its devasting effect on the human race. In this way, we will protect the liberties that we hold dear in our country. I am concerned that as a society, we have lost the concept of brotherhood and sisterhood and move simply for whatever we see as our advantage – whether it be financially or socially. I hope we as martial artists see through this wrong-thinking and work towards making our country a safer place.

2020 is turning out to be a very, very different year than what was planned.
